Just bought a JK? Answers to the questions every new owner asks
“Just got my first Jeep, now what?” might be the most common post in Jeep communities. I’ve owned a 2007 JK two-door and a 2015 JKU. No lift kit, no fantasy build. Here’s what I tell new owners.

What should I mod first?
Fix the annoyance you notice on every drive. For most JK owners that’s the headlights, because the stock ones are famously weak. After that, the upgrade that changes the Jeep the most is a CarPlay radio.
- Headlights: the first thing I’d tell a new JK owner to change. Plan an intermediate install, and aim them. Headlight questions →
- CarPlay radio: my favorite upgrade, and it’s in both Jeeps. CarPlay questions →
- Grab handles: an easy daily-use win. I bought the same set for both Jeeps. Grab handle review →
- Stubby antenna: a five-minute swap that cleans up the profile. Local stations come in fine. Antenna review →
I live somewhere with real winters. What do I need?
Rubber floor mats. In Minnesota, snow, slush and road salt end up on the floor every day. I swapped the WeatherTechs in my JKU for Kiwi Masters, and after about a year of slush they’re holding up awesome. The matching cargo liner is sold separately.
Should I get a locking gas cap?
Not from my experience. The locking one I tried wouldn’t unlock at the pump in the cold, and I stood there for 15 minutes. I returned it. I run a plain cap under a decorative cover now.
My check engine light came on after I filled up. Is something wrong?
It might just be the gas cap. A loose cap threw code P1128 on my Jeep, and three solid twists fixed it. P1128 guide →
Will parts for my year fit?
Don’t assume they will. Body style, trim, wiring, earlier mods and listing changes all affect fitment. Match the current listing to your exact year and configuration before you buy.
Is a JK practical as a daily driver? Two-door or four-door?
I’ve had one of each. My 2015 four-door JKU is better for daily life. It hauls way more stuff (a full-size snow blower, in fact). The longer wheelbase makes it ride better, the engine is zippier, and with kids it’s nice that they have their own doors.
My 2007 two-door was fun and more nimble to handle, but it rides way worse on the highway.
Which year should I buy? Are JKs reliable?
That’s asked a lot, but I’m not going to pretend I’ve tested every year. I’ve owned a 2007 and a 2015, and I’d only be guessing about the rest.

The parts behind these answers

HWSTAR 7-inch JK LED headlights
A huge improvement over the famously weak stock lamps. Installation was easy; aiming them correctly is not optional.

AWESAFE wireless CarPlay & Android Auto radio
My favorite JK upgrade—I have one in both Jeeps. CarPlay and Android Auto bring modern maps, music, and calls to the older dashboard. The backup camera wiring is the real work.

Rough Country front steel grab handles
Solid, well-positioned handles that stay above my head instead of brushing it. I installed the same part on my 2007 two-door and 2015 four-door.

Rydonair stubby Wrangler antenna
I liked it on my first Jeep, so I bought another for my other JK. It cleans up the profile without the tall stock whip, and the swap takes about five minutes.

Kiwi Master floor mats
I swapped my WeatherTechs out for these. Perfect fit, a great tire-track pattern, and about a year of Minnesota slush later they’re holding up awesome.

Xprite gas cap cover
A wheel-pattern cover for the JK’s exposed gas cap. It looks awesome on my JKU, and I pair it with a plain gas cap—not the locking one I returned.
