Xprite gas cap cover on my JKU: a small mod that looks awesome
Jeep left the JK’s gas cap out in the open. This Xprite cover dresses it up and fits today’s world better. I put it on my 2015 JKU in December 2024 and paired it with a plain replacement gas cap—not the locking one I returned.

Why I added it
Jeep left the gas cap easy to get to on purpose. It goes back to the days when soldiers needed fast access to refuel. The cover is more suited to today’s world, and it just looks good—the wheel pattern really stands out on the green JKU.
It has a keyhole look, but mine came with no keys. It’s decoration, not security, and that’s fine by me. I tried a locking gas cap once and it left me stuck at the pump for 15 minutes in the cold. Under the cover I run a plain replacement gas cap. It’s inexpensive, easy to put on, and fits my 2015 JKU just fine.

How the install went
It wasn’t difficult, but getting the old clips out was a little hard. You have to take the driver’s-side taillight off to reach them.
Be careful not to ding or scratch the paint while you shimmy the old piece out. After that, the new cover slips right in. The hardest part is getting at those clips.

Heads-up
What to know
The lock on this cover is just for looks. If you want real security, this isn’t it. After my locking cap experience, I’d rather be able to fuel up.

On my 2015 four-door JKU. The cover is listed for 2007–2018 JK two-doors and four-doors. The replacement gas cap is listed for 2003–2018 Wranglers.

Does the Xprite gas cap cover actually lock?
Mine doesn’t. It has a keyhole look, but no keys came with it. It’s decoration.
Do you have to remove the taillight to install a JK gas cap cover?
Yes. You pull the driver’s-side taillight to reach the clips holding the old one in.
Should I get a locking gas cap instead?
Not from my experience. The locking one I tried wouldn’t open at the pump in the cold, so I returned it.
Can a loose gas cap cause a check engine light?
Yes. A loose cap threw code P1128 on my Jeep. Three solid twists fixed it.
