Jeep Wrangler JK model years: 2007–2018, and how to tell a JK from a JL
A JK is not the same Jeep as a TJ or a JL, and parts do not swap freely between them. This is the identification and production-history reference I wished existed before I bought parts for my own two Wranglers.
The fast answer
If your Wrangler was built between August 2006 and April 2018, it's a JK — model years 2007 through 2018. Two-door JKs and four-door JKUs (Unlimited) were both offered from the very first year, which is the detail that trips up a lot of secondhand buyers.

What changed inside the JK's own 11-year run
The JK generation itself was not static. The biggest shift landed for model year 2012: the 3.8L V6 was replaced by the 3.6L Pentastar V6, paired with a new 5-speed automatic (the previous automatic was a 4-speed). Interior gauges and controls were revised at the same time. If you're sourcing engine, transmission, or some interior parts, 2007–2011 and 2012–2018 JKs are effectively two different parts pools.

Where JKs were built
JK production ran from August 2006 to April 2018 at Chrysler's Toledo Complex in Toledo, Ohio, with additional assembly at AAV in Cairo, Egypt for export markets. Toledo alone had built its one-millionth JK by May 2013, and total worldwide JK production is estimated at roughly 2.1 million units by the end of the run — the best-selling Wrangler generation to date.

How many JK owners are there, worldwide?
No registry publishes a global "JK owners" count, so here is our own estimate and how we got there: roughly 2.1 million JKs were produced worldwide. JKs on the road today range from about 8 to 19 years old, and U.S. drivers keep a vehicle for around 7–8 years on average before it changes hands. Blending that turnover rate against the JK's age spread suggests each unit has had, on average, somewhere around 1.8 to 2.2 owners so far — which puts the cumulative worldwide total of people who have owned a JK at roughly 3.5 to 4.5 million. Treat that as a reasoned estimate, not an official statistic.
Beyond the U.S.
JK owners outside the U.S., including Japan
The JK was never a U.S.-only vehicle. Japan is Jeep's fourth-largest global market for the Wrangler, and the Wrangler alone accounts for more than half of all American-brand vehicles sold there — driven by both official Jeep Japan sales and independent used-import dealers bringing U.S.-market JKs into the country. Quick questions
Is a Jeep Wrangler JK the same as a JKU?
JK is the generation name for every 2007–2018 Wrangler. JKU specifically means the four-door Unlimited body style within that generation. A 2007–2018 two-door is still a JK; it's just not a JKU.
How do I tell a JK from a JL without the VIN?
The windshield rake is usually the fastest tell: JK windshields sit more upright, JL windshields are noticeably more raked back. Fender flare shape is a secondary cue. When it matters for a purchase, confirm with the VIN or build sheet instead of relying on looks alone.
Do 2007–2011 JK parts fit a 2012–2018 JK?
Not always. The 2012 refresh changed the engine, transmission, and some interior parts, so always match engine- or drivetrain-specific parts to your exact model year rather than just "JK."
